Obligate ectoparasite that feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Cannot jump or fly; they crawl from person to person through head-to-head contact. Eggs (nits) are cemented to hair shafts.

Cause intense itching and possible secondary skin infections from scratching; however, they do not transmit diseases.
