Wireworm (click-beetle larva)

Soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, and beneath bark, especially in gardens, fields, and grasslands.

Many feed on plant roots, seeds, and underground stems; others consume decaying organic matter or small soil organisms.

Hard-bodied, cylindrical larvae move through soil and often curl when disturbed. Development commonly lasts one to several years before pupating and emerging as click beetles.

Some species damage crops by feeding on roots and tubers, while others help decompose organic material and serve as prey for birds and predatory insects.
