Common wood-nymph butterfly

Open woodland edges, meadows, prairies, roadsides, and gardens across much of North America.

Adults drink nectar from flowers, including daisies and composites. Caterpillars feed mainly on grasses.

Adults often fly low and flutter weakly, resting with wings closed; eyespots can startle predators. There is generally one generation annually, with caterpillars overwintering among grasses.

Harmless to people and plants; it helps pollinate flowers and serves as prey for birds and other insectivores.
