Jerusalem Cricket (Child of the Earth)

Underground burrows, beneath rocks, logs, and damp soil in western North America and parts of Mexico

Omnivorous; feeds on roots, decaying organic matter, tubers, small insects, and other invertebrates

Nocturnal and subterranean ground-dwellers; they use large, rounded heads and strong legs to dig burrows. Communicate via drumming their abdomens against the ground.

Harmless to humans as they are non-venomous, though they can deliver a painful bite if provoked using their strong mandibles. Beneficial to the ecosystem by aerating soil and breaking down organic material.
