Diet & Feeding
Strictly carnivorous; primarily feeds on ants but will eat other small insects and arthropods that fall into its trap.
Behavior Patterns
Commonly known as 'doodlebugs,' they dig cone-shaped pits in the sand to trap prey. They hide at the bottom of the pit and use their large mandibles to seize victims. After the larval stage, they undergo metamorphosis to become winged adults that resemble damselflies.
Risks & Benefits
Harmless to humans; their bites are rare and non-venomous. They are beneficial to the ecosystem as they help control ant populations.
