Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous herbivore; feeds on a wide variety of fruit, vegetable, and ornamental crops including apples, peaches, tomatoes, and corn.

Behavior Patterns

Known for its shield-like shape and mottled brown appearance. They enter homes during fall to find warmth (overwintering) and release a pungent odor from scent glands when disturbed or crushed.

Risks & Benefits

Major agricultural pest that damages crops; considered a nuisance pest in homes. They pose no direct physical threat to humans or pets but can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
