Gardens, meadows, forest edges, and other flower-rich habitats worldwide. Adults commonly visit composite flowers for nectar and pollen.

Adults feed on nectar and pollen; larvae of *Eristalis tenax* develop in nutrient-rich, stagnant water and filter-feed on microorganisms and organic matter.

Adults hover skillfully, bask, and often mimic bees or wasps for protection. They are important pollinators; larvae are known as rat-tailed maggots because of their breathing siphon.

Harmless to humans and lacking a sting; occasional accidental contact is benign. Adults provide valuable pollination, while larvae help decompose organic material in water.
