Ground beetle

Often found under stones, logs, and leaf litter; may wander indoors, especially near doors and lights.

Most are predators of insects, larvae, and other small invertebrates; some species eat seeds or plant matter.

Typically nocturnal and fast-running. Adults shelter in moist, protected places and may enter buildings accidentally.

Harmless to people and household structures; beneficial outdoors because many species consume garden pests.
