Natural Habitat

Typically found in dry, sandy soil, sheltered areas under rock ledges, or loose dirt beneath structures where rain doesn't reach.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous predators that feed primarily on ants and other small insects that fall into their conical pits.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae dig conical pits in loose sand and wait at the bottom for prey to slide in. They often walk backward, leaving winding trails which gives them the nickname 'doodlebug'.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans; beneficial as they consume pest insects like ants. The larvae can bite if handled roughly but are generally not aggressive to people.
