Bird's Nest Fungus Egg (Peridiole)

Damp environments, typically found on mulch, rotting wood, or manure in gardens and forests.

Decomposing organic matter (saprotrophic).

These are not insects, but the spore-containing structures of a fungus. They are splash-dispersed; when a raindrop hits the cup-shaped fruiting body, these eggs are ejected several feet away where they stick to surfaces to grow.

Harmless to humans and pets. They are beneficial decomposers that help break down organic material and return nutrients to the soil.
