Natural Habitat

Found worldwide in pantries, kitchens, and warehouses; also found in bird nests.

A generalist feeder that consumes a wide variety of dried plant products including flour, bread, spices (especially paprika), dried herbs, and even prescription drugs.

Behavior Patterns

Active year-round in indoor environments; they are capable of flight and are attracted to light; females lay up to 75 eggs at a time.

Considered a major stored-product pest; they cause significant economic damage to food stocks and can contaminate goods with waste and cocoons; not harmful to human health via bites or stings.
