Small ground beetle (likely a rove beetle)

Usually found in soil, leaf litter, under stones, compost, and decaying organic matter; adults may wander indoors.

Most species are predators of small insects, mites, larvae, and other invertebrates; some scavenge decomposing material.

Fast-moving, typically nocturnal, and often hides in litter or crevices. Rove beetles have short wing covers that leave much of the abdomen exposed and may raise the abdomen when disturbed.

Generally harmless and beneficial as a predator of pest organisms and decomposer-associated insects. Avoid handling unfamiliar rove beetles, since a few species can cause skin irritation through defensive chemicals.
