Found in damp, humid environments, especially near paper, cardboard, old books, and damp pantry goods or moldy surfaces.

Feed primarily on microscopic mold, fungi, algae, and starchy materials like book glue or wallpaper paste.

They are wingless, fast-running insects that thrive in high humidity; they do not fly and tend to aggregate in dark, moist areas.

They are generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or spread disease, but they can be a nuisance and may indicate a moisture or mold problem in the home.
