Pantropical and temperate regions; commonly found indoors in pantries, kitchens, and warehouses where food is stored.

Highly varied; feeds on stored grain products, flours, dried herbs, spices, drugs, leather, and book bindings.

Adults are capable of flight and are attracted to light; they do not eat, focusing instead on reproduction. Larvae are the primary feeders, tunneling through food sources and creating silky cocoons for pupation.

Common household pest that can contaminate and destroy large quantities of stored food products and museum specimens; they pose no direct health risk to humans but cause economic loss.
