Crane Fly

Found worldwide in moist habitats, near water, wetlands, forests, and often attracted to lights near homes.

Adults typically feed on nectar, plant sap, or do not feed at all; larvae feed on decaying organic matter, plant roots, and fungi.

Adults are weak fliers often seen hovering around lights. Larvae (known as leatherjackets) live in soil or damp substrate. They do not bite humans.

Completely harmless to humans (do not bite or sting). They provide an important food source for birds, fish, and other wildlife. Larvae can occasionally be minor agricultural pests in lawns.
